Writing the guide book for the Baekdudaegan has been a bit like walking the ridge itself, long and arduous. It'd be fair to say that 90% of this encyclopedia of cultural and historical information has been done, and is now in the hands of the publishers. The Baekdudaegan, once you investigate it further is a truly remarkable landmark on the peninsula, and like an old tree, has stood there and watched Korea manufacture its course of history since Dangun (3000BC) and before. The book will hopefully be ready for sale by mid-year 2009. I in the meantime will be returning to Korea in late March to begin the 2000km exploration of the 9 jeong-maeks that feed off the Baekdu-daegan. The webiste I will run during this expedition will be at www.hikekorea.com, currently up but still under development. I plan to display on its pages photo slide shows, quirky home videos, all backed by NZ music only. There s no doubt that I will meet many different people on the way, it should be a melody of comedy, seriousness, wonder, drunkedness, and weirdness. See you at www.hikekorea.com. Nice article in South Korea's, SEOUL Magazine p.41, about the walk (Baekdu-daegan) Andrew and I did in 2007. The same publisher will be launching the Guide Book in Seoul, April 2009.

The Guide Book has been a mammoth task, that has swooned away a lot of our spare-time, but hopefully it will a motivating source of enthusiasm providing information for people to go to the great white ridge and explore its scenic wonders and historical treasures.

Apart from the odd foreigner residing in Korea, whom are when they can, venturing to the great ridge to visit its attractions, two Americans have also made the effort to come to Korea and attempt to walk the entire length of the Baekdu-daegan in South Korea. They recently started their journey in Jirisan NP, let's hope that it is a successful and wonderful journey for them. You can visit their progress at the above link.

Guide Book to be released April 2009

We are pleased to announce that two books will be published on the Baekdu-daegan.
http://www.seoulselection.com/ a progressive and establised Korean Publisher are equally excited about the long-term prospects of the great white ridge and have agreed to publish the two books, hopefully by April 2009.

One will be a guide book containing as much information as possible about the ridge and how to hike it. The second book to be written by Prof. David Mason and will be an informative account about the symbolic significance of the Baekdu-daegan and the many interesting ways it represents the people of Korea.

We also plan to launch an interactive website about the Baekdu-daegan sometime later this year, so that hikers can share and update information about the ridge or other long distance hiking locations in Korea. (Pictured left is a 1750 map of Korea highlighting mountain ridges)

The Baekdu-daegan is the spine of Korea. It never crosses water and its magical qualities were notarized by the 8th century master Doseon-daesa whom traveled widely around the Korean peninsula sourcing its energies.
The concept that the Baekdu-daegan is the energy of the Korean peninsula is a result of his research and subsequent introduction of Pungsu-jiri (Geomancy) to the Korean people. Recreational hikers in Korea now seek that energy as they through-hike or section-hike the 750km long Baekdu-daegan in South Korea every year. In South Korea there are also 9 other ridges that transmit the peninsulas energies throughout the regions. They are called Jeong-maeks. Including the Baekdu-daegan there is about 2500kms of mountain ridges to walk and investigate that represent the peninsulas magical allusions. You can see the ridges marked in the attached map.

백두대간은 한반도의 척추이다. 그것은 한반도를 세로로 달리면서 많은 강줄기를 하나도 가로막지 않는다. 8세기에 풍수지리설의 대가 도선대사는 한반도 전역을 두루 여행하면서 백두대간 에너지(氣)의 근원을 알아내고 그 신비성을 입증하였다. 백두대간이 한반도의 기의 근원이라는 개념은 그가 풍수지리설에 대해서 연구하고 소개한 결과이다. 한국의 리크리에이션 등산객들은 매년 남한의 백두대간 750km를 종주를 하든 구분 등산을 하든 백두대간의 기에 대해서 탐구를 하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 남한에는 또한 백두대간의 기를 사방으로 전파하는 9개의 다른 산줄기가 있다. 그 산줄기들을 정맥이라고 부른다. 한반도의 신비한 기에 대해 알아보기 위해 걸어야 할 산줄기는 백두대간을 포함해서 2500km나 된다. 그 산줄기들을 첨부된 지도에 표시해 두었다.

Andrew Douch has now set out to empirically discover the Nakdong-Jeongmaek. Starting on a beach located at the end of a spit, on a small wooded peninsula in Busan, at the Nakdong river delta, he will section-hike on his weekends, the 500kms north to Taebaek-san. Now that the walk has been completed, there will be some further developments on the Baekdu-daegan. Andrew and I now plan to compile the information gathered for the purpose of producing the first English guide book on this magnificent walk. We plan to have completed the final draft by end of April 2008. Publishers are interested, so there is no doubt that a book will be created. We also plan to turn this blogsite into a website so that we can start some dialogue on the Baekdu-daegan for hikers. This will help keep the information on the trail up to date. In relation to the guide book we would also like to produce a series of bi-lingual (Hangul and English) maps of the Baekdu-daegan.
이제 백두대간 원정은 완전히 끝났다. 백두대간에는 더 발전적인 새로운 무엇이 있을 것이다. Andrew와 나는 이 멋진 산행에서 수집한 정보들을 가지고 최초의 영문 가이드북을 만들기 위해 지금 집필을 하고 있다. 2008년 4월 말까지는 최종 원고를 완성할 계획이다. 출판사들은 흥미를 가지고 있다. 왜냐하면 의심의 여지가 없을 정도로 흥미있는 책이 만들어질 것이기 때문이다. 우리들은 또한 등산객들을 위하여 백두대간에 관한 폭넓은 의견교환이 이루어질 수 있도록 블로그사이트를 웹사이트로 바꿀 계획이다. 이것은 최근의 등산로에 관한 정보를 받아들이는데 도움이 될 것이다.

Obstacles to overcome 극복해야 할 장애
As far as the aspect of thru-walking the great ridge of South Korea goes, we did find some notable obstacles. I have identified the two most important ones. They are that the Baekdu-daegan is not actually a recognised long distant hiking trail. Persons may walk it but the Korean Government has not officially opened it as a long distant hiking trail. The Baekdu-daegan therefore needs to be delegated as a long distant hiking trail so that it can be marketed, managed, maintained, and developed under the responsibility of one group or a combination of delegated departments. The second is that between 95km and 123km’s of the trail have been closed indefinitely by Korea National Parks Authority. This is for reasons of preservation of land and wildlife. Most of these closed areas will not be open for another 20 years. This in sense means that there is no right of way or continuous path from start point to end point for the Baekdu-daegan – a major and important ingredient for the definition of a long distant hiking trail! The concept of walking along the ridge and never crossing water is also now lost indefinitely.
남한의 거대한 산맥을 종주한다는 견지에서 약간의 주목할 만한 장애를 발견했다. 아주 중요한 두 가지는 다음과 같다.
첫째 백두대간은 사실상 인정된 장거리하이킹코스가 아니라는 사실이다. 사람들은 그곳을 산행하고 있지만 한국정부는 공식적으로 장거리하이킹코스로 개방하지 않고 있다. 그러므로 백두대간은 어떤 단체 또는 위임된 부서의 책임 하에 관리해야 한다. 시장성이 있게 운영하고 지속적이고 발전적이기 위해서 장거리하이킹코스로 특성화할 필요가 있다.
둘째로 한국국립공원관리공단은 등산로의 95km -123km의 구간을 명확한 기준 없이 폐쇄하고 있다. 이것은 토양과 야생생물들을 보호하기 위해서이다. 이들 폐쇄된 지역의 대부분은 앞으로 20여 년 동안 개방되지 않을 것이라 한다.
백두대간에는 공로(公路) 또는 처음부터 끝까지 연속된 등산로가 없다. - 장거리하이킹코스에 대한 정의에 빠질 수 없는 중요한 요소이다! 이것으로 인해 백두대간의 능선을 따라 하는 산행에서 물을 건너지 않는다는 당연한 개념은 사라지고 말았다.
Solutions 해결 방안
However, this does not mean the walk is not worthy of attempting. There is still another 620 odd kilometers of ridge to walk offering tremendous social, cultural, historical, sacred, and natural outdoor experiences. What needs to be done now is that we need to find alternate routes that will take the thru-walker around the closed and prohibited areas, down the spurs, into the valleys, alongside the great ridge, back up the spurs and back onto the ridge again in an open area. These detours will offer the walker great opportunities to visit many of the fascinating attractions that live or exist on the flanks of the Baekdu-daegan. Examples are temples, cultural sites, small farming communities, and so on.
The Korea Forest Service, Korea National Parks Authority, Korea Tourism Organization, and Ministry of Environment will be made aware of his idea. We will be making arrangements to find the alternate routes and get them recognised as rights of way for the hiker or thru-walkers. Many great long distant hiking trails around the world constantly have to close and open trails for various reasons, at the same time offering alternate routes so that the closed areas can be respected and protected.
그러나 이것은 산행을 시도할 만한 가치가 없다는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 거기에는 아직도 놀랄만한 사회적, 문화적, 역사적, 신성하고 자연적인 외부체험을 할 수 있는 또 다른 620여km의 능선이 있다. 이제 꼭 해야 할 일은 등산로가 폐쇄되고 금지구역이 되어 속도를 줄여서, 계곡으로 내려가서, 거대한 능선을 따라 우회해서, 힘을 내어 다시 등산로가 개방되어 있는 지역의 능선으로 올라가야 하는 일이 없도록 교체루트를 찾아야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 우회로는 등산객들에게 백두대간의 측면에 살고 있는 또는 존재하는 아주 매혹적인 것들을 방문할 수 있는 훌륭한 기회를 제공하게 될 것이다. 예를 들면 사? ? 문화적인 현장, 소규모의 농촌지역사회 등등 이다.
한국산림청, 한국국립공원관리공단, 한국관광공사 그리고 환경부는 이러한 아이디어에 민감하게 대응해야 할 것이다. 특히 한국산림청은 열정적으로 조장해야 할 것이다. 우리들은 하이커들과 종주 등산객들을 위해 교체루트를 찾아서 공로(公路)로 인정하게 하는데 조정역할을 하도록 노력할 것이다. 세계의 많은 훌륭한 장거리하이킹코스는 다양한 이유로 끊임없이 등산로를 폐쇄하고 개방하고 있다. 동시에 폐쇄된 지역이 훌륭하게 보호될 수 있도록 교체루트를 제공해야 한다

Conclusion 결론
Perhaps once a complete trail has been found then it can be officially recognized by the Government and become an official long distant hiking trail that South Korea can market internationally.
아마도 한번 완전한 등산로가 확립되면 정부에서 공식적으로 인정을 한다면 국제적으로 시장성이 있는 공식적인 장거리하이킹코스가 될 것이다.

Andrew and I will also be producing a travel story about the remarkable and unforgettable experiences we had along the way. This will be put together by me along with the valued help and input of Andrew as we recall our sojourns.
Prof. David Mason will also be producing a coffee-table classical and educational style book covering the Baekdu-daegan and what it represents as a mountain range, a populous region, a religious territory, a sacred area, and an historical icon of the Korean Peninsula and its inhabitants.
We hope to obtain the same publisher for all three books.

1424.4m 고지인 점봉은 아름다운 오색계곡의 위쪽 남설악에 있다. 그곳에서 보는 오색계곡의 벼랑은 그 사람으로 하여금 경이로움에 사로잡히게 할 것이다. 자, 능선 위를 걸어 보라.

The Sanshins and Tigers of Seorak-san 설악산의 산신과 호랑이들

Seorak-san has many great mountains and temples. Each temple will have a sanshin-gak containing impressive paintings of a white bearded man normally flanked by a tiger. He is the mountain spirit of that area, an ancient and indigenous animistic religion of Korea which featured a long time before the arrival of Buddhism. I noticed that the Tigers in these paintings were a lot more foreboding and magnificant than others elsewhere, perhaps depicting how strong the Tigers of Seorak-san might have once looked like due to the tough terrain of Seorak-san. The Koreans are a mountain people and the Baekdu-daegan (white head great ridge)is part of their animistic heritage.Expert information on Korea's mountain spirits can be found at Prof. David Mason's website at www.san-shin.org
설악산에는 큰 봉우리와 절이 많다. 절마다 산신각이 있고, 산신각에는 일반적으로 호랑이 옆에 흰수염을 기른 노인이 앉아 있는 아주 인상적인 그림이 있다. 그 노인이 바로 그 지역의 산신이다. 불교가 한국에 전래되기 오래전부터 한국사람들이 주로 믿어오던 고대의 토테미즘(목석등도 생물과 마찬가지로 영혼이 있다고 믿음)적 토속신앙이다.나는 이 그림속의 호랑이가 다른 어떤 곳에 있는 것보다도 훨씬 더 신성하고 장엄한 모습에 주목을 했다.설악산의 호랑이가 이처럼 더욱 신성하고 장엄하게 묘사된 것은 아마도 설악산의 험준한 지세의 영향 때문일 것이다. 그래서 내게는 더 그렇게 보였을지도 모른다. 한국인들은 산을 배경으로 하거나 산골에서 살아온 사람들이다. 그러므로 백두대간은 그들의 토속신앙의 원형을 아직도 간직하고 있다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.

On Friday the 30th November 2007, I was granted the opportunity to meet some of the crew that promote the Baekdudaegan within the Korea Forest Service whom are doing a great job of recognising its beauty. There they explained to me their strategies in developing the Baekdudaegan, a view unfortunately not shared by National Parks Korea whom have closed some of the Baekdudaegan trail for the supposed preservation of small deer and feral cats - leaving the continuous spirit of the Jong-ju (ridge) disrupted for those humans that seek its reverence. Starting from the left is the pleasant and lovely communications editor Jimyung Kim, Baekdudaegan protection team member Han Chang-sul, Bawisansaram (me), Trail and Hiking Team Eun Sik Park (Ph.D), and Deputy Director of Int Co-op and Resources team Lee Kyung-ho. Muryeonggogae is an isolated pass where an abandonded American soldier in the shape of a ghost roams the ridge in search of his fractured platoon. This is a sunset shot of his ridge.

I also managed to get some good views of the ridge from here to the southern entrance of Dogyusan. Yookshipryeong lies hidden in the saddle between the ridge in the foreground and the mighty ledges of Dogyusan.

Snuck back to Nogodan on my journey and caught a view of the ridge from Nogodan to Cheongwangbong (1915m) the first leg of the Baekdudaegan. Must have been about -5 in the wind, hence I was the only bugger on the summit. Cheongwangbong is the highest feature you can see in the horizon, some 30km away.
나의 여행에서 살짝 뒤로 물러나 노고단으로 돌아가서, 우리가 처음으로 백두대간 산행을 시작한 노고단에서 천왕봉(1915m)에 이르는 능선의 한 장면. 세찬 바람 속에서 기온은 -5도는 분명히 되었을 것이다. 그런 날씨에도 아랑곳하지 않고 정상에 서있는 나는 지리산의 유일한 바보녀석이었다. 한 30km 쯤 멀리 있는 지평선을 보면 천왕봉이 제일 높은 봉우리라는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다.

Riding a motorbike in Korea in early winter was a stupid idea, and it was duly dumped in Daegu. Mark Dake a Canadian based in Seoul who is also writing a guide book to Korea kindly lent me his ruby red 2-door Honda coupe which I am now whizzing around the Hanban-do in. Last Monday I returned to Jirisan area and have since then slowly made my way forward and am now in the Sognisan area.I have been revisiting many of the passes that Andrew and I trudged through and will post photos soon. So far I have fed a forgotten cat some soya milk in Shinpungyoung,that poor fella was so lonely I had to keep him/her out of my car, picked up a 70 year old ajuma hitchiker in Byeoksong-myeon who was as loud as a packed stadium, and had W8000 stolen from me in a Jjimjul-bang in Gimcheon whilst I was sleeping - that prick better had spent it wisely because the Sanshin has got him in his crosshairs. Today I met staff at Korea Forest Service H.Q. in Daejon whom gave me about 10-kilograms of impressive books on the Baekdudaegan, and tonight I sleep in Okcheon. The ridge is looking mighty tender from the flanks, I'm sure just a scratch would set it alight.

한국에서 초겨울에 모터바이크(오토바이)를 타고 여행한다는 것은 어리석은 생각이었다. 그래서 대구에서 모터바이크를 포기했다. 서울에 살고 있으면서 한국에 대한 가이드북을 쓰고 있는 캐나다인 Mark Dake씨가 친절하게도 그의 자동차 진홍색의 투도어 혼다 쿠페(2인승 승용차)를 빌려주어 지금은 계획된 여정을 차질없이 씽씽 달리고 있다. 지난 월요일에 지리산 지역으로 돌아와서 그때부터 차근차근 내가 가려는 길을 가고 있다. 그래서 지금은 속리산 지역에 와 있다. 내가 Andrew와 같이 터벅터벅 걸어갔던 많은 고갯길들을 다시 답사하고 있는 중이다. 사진들은 곧 올릴 예정이다. 지금까지 나는 신풍령에서 길 잃은 고양이를 두유를 먹이면서 데리고 다녔다, 그러나 불쌍한 친구를 차에서 내려 외롭게 버려두고 떠나지 않을 수 없었다. 벽송면에서 70살 할머니를 태워 주었는데, 그녀는 혼자이면서 자동차 편승 여행자로 꽉 찬 경기장을 연상하게 할 정도로 차안을 시끄럽게 했다. 김천에 있는 한 찜질방에서 내가 잠자는 동안 8,000원을 도둑맞았다. 훔쳐간 그 사람은 그 돈을 보람 있게 써야 할 것이다, 왜냐하면 산신은 그를 찾아내어 벌을 내릴 것이기 때문이다. 오늘 대전에서 한국산림청본부에 있는 한 직원을 만났다. 그는 10kg 쯤 되는 백두대간에 관한 좋은 책들을 나에게 주었다. 오늘밤은 옥천에서 지낸다. 능선으로부터 많은 부분이 기계로 깎아낸 것처럼 평평하고 삭막해 보인다. 그 주위에 나무와 풀들이 우거진 것과 비교하면 너무 낯선 풍경. 산불로 인한 피해 때문인데 산행인들에게는 안타까움과 경각심을 함께 불러일으킨다.

Well the walking's all been done for the South Korean leg of the Baekdu-daegan trail and the lads left the calm of the ridge for the chaos of Seoul, dodging traffic and trying to stay out of trouble.
Roger delivered a power-point slide show of the trek to the Royal Asiatic Society last Tuesday which went down well while Andrew borrowed a car and took off cross country to pick up his stuff which was left strewn all over the peninsula.
Roger has since taken Andrew's motorbike and returned to the ridge, where he will further research the facilities near the trail, should he not freeze in the process and will hopefully update this page occasionally.
이제, 남한 구간의 백두대간 종주는 모두 끝났다. 젊은이들은 고요한 산속을 벗어나 번잡한 서울로 떠났다, 이제부터는 복잡한 자동차들을 날렵하게 피해야 하고 안전을 위해서 항상 조심하고 긴장해야 한다. Roger는 지난 화요일 영국왕립 아시아학회에서 우리들의 멀고 긴 여행에 관한 파워포인트슬라이드쇼를 발표했다.발표회는 아주 좋은 반응을 얻었다. 한편 Andrew는 자동차를 한 대 빌려 한반도 전역에 흩어져 있는 필요한 자료를 모으기 위해 전국의 산야를 답사하는 여행을 떠났다.Roger는 백두대간 등산로 주위에 있는 더 많은 시설과 자료들을 조사하기 위해 Andrew의 모터바이크를 타고 산으로 돌아갔다. 날씨가 너무 추워 도중에 모터바이크 여행이 전혀 불가능해지는 일이 없다면 때때로 이 페이지를 새로운 내용으로 업데이트하게 될 것이다.

On Saturday Nov 10 we walked out at Jinbu-ryeong pass, 70 days after heading off from Jusan-ri in Jiri-san national park. We were greeted to a warm reception from the team before heading to the Osaek valley for celebration.
지리산국립공원의 중산리에서 출발한 지 70일 후인 11월 10일 토요일 진부령고개에서 우리들의 백두대간 산행은 끝났다.축하행사를 위해 오색계곡으로 출발하기 전에 우리팀원들로부터 뜨거운 환영의 인사를 받았다.

The now closed Alps ski resort above Jinbu-ryeong, after over two months in the hills it was odd to walk out through a ghost town.
진부령 위쪽에 있는, 지금은 겨울을 기다리고 있는 알프스 스키리조트, 겨울철 두어 달 동안 붐비고 나면 이곳은 모두가 떠나고 ‘텅 빈 유령의 공간’ 이 된다.

We came across a bunch of stone tablets commemorating the achievements of past BDDG's, and in true antipodean style made our own out of rocks and wood, accompanied with a bottle of Lee Dongyu's now famous honey soju.

Last night we stayed out at our friend and Seorak-san park ranger Lee Dongyun's house in the rugged gorge of Micheon-gol, which flows from northern Odae-san.
Our 형어 Poncho really turned it on hosting a fish barbecue with his father and neighbours. We drank Gulsul (70% honey 30% alcohol) made by Dongyun and his Dad from beehives attached to the house...another good night just off the trail.
This morning, despite his condition, Dongyun put on his best and got us up early to meet our appointment with Arirang TV out at Jochim-ryeong pass, from where the three of us along with Jeong Jongyeol (lefty) began hiking together at the beginning of the week.

조침령으로 돌아오다
어제 밤에는 우리의 친구, 설악공원 구조대원인 이동윤씨 집에서 지냈다. 그의 집은 북오대산으로부터 흘러내려오는 미천골의 바위가 많은 협곡에 있다.동윤씨는 그의 아버지와 이웃들과 함께 물고기 바비큐를 만들어 우리에게 대접하며 멋지게 주인노릇을 했다. 또한 동윤씨와 그의 아버지가 자기 집에 붙어있는 벌집을 따서 직접 담근 꿀술(꿀;70%, 알콜;30%)을 마셨다. 물고기 바비큐와 꿀술 그리고 한국인의 인심까지. 막 산행을 마친 우리에게 주어진 또 하나의 멋진 밤이었다.오늘 아침, 조침령에서 Arirang TV 기자들과 만나기로 한 약속 때문에 동윤씨는 컨디션이 별로 좋지 않은데도 불구하고 최상의 컨디션인 체 하면서 아침 일찍 우리를 깨웠다. 그곳으로부터 우리 셋은 정종열(왼손잡이)씨를 따라 이번주 첫 산행을 시작했다.

A walk in the war zone 민간인 통제구역을 산행하다

It must be noted that we were not allowed to take photographs north of our location on Hyangno-bong. We understood and abided to this rule.

As an added bonus to our trek we were granted permission to walk further north from our end point into the off-limits militarized zone of South Korea.
We were able to walk 20km to the peak of Hyangno-bong and see the Baekdu-daegan stretch through the DMZ. This was a one time chance and we are very grateful to Korean Tourism Ambassador Dho Young-shim and her husband Dr.Kwon Jung-dal of the Korean Freedom League for enabling this to happen.
우리들의 멀고 고된 여행의 보너스로 우리산행이 끝나는 지점인 진부령보다 더 멀리 북쪽으로, 민간인 통제구역인 군사지역 안으로 추가 산행을 할 수 있도록 허가를 받았다. 우리들은 향로봉 정상까지 20km를 더 가서 DMZ(비무장지대)에 펼쳐진 백두대간을 볼 수 있었다. 감격적인 일이었다. 이런 좋은 기회가 다시 또 있을 수 있겠는가! 그래서 우리들은 이 산행을 할 수 있도록 주선해 주신 도영심 한국체육관광대사와 그녀의 남편인 한국자유총연맹 총재 권정달 박사에게 진심으로 감사한다.

Hyangno-bong means "Incense burning peak". It is now a place of strategic military importance so it was surprising to find this modern altar and incense burner at its highest point, right below the observation tower
향로봉(香爐峰)은 ‘향을 피우는 봉우리' 라는 뜻이다. 이곳은 지금 군사상, 전략적으로 대단히 중요한 곳이다. 그러므로 이 높은 곳에서 현대식 제단과 향로를 본다는 것은 참으로 놀라운 일이었고 군부대에서 이런 주둔지의 전통적 의미를 살렸다는 것은 이채로운 것이었다.

Seorak-san is the most northern national park in the country, and the last we will pass through before reaching our end point at Jinbu-ryeong.
Seorak-san is the most popular national park outside of Seoul and it's very easy to see why. It is a vast area of spectacular, craggy rocks and high peaks which feed mineral rich valleys. Our trail through the park began in the Osaek valley, from where we walked up the ridge to Daecheong-bong with our new mate Poncho (Lee Dong-gyun) before walking out along the "Dragons spine" the following morning.
설악산은 한국에서 가장 북쪽에 있는 국립공원이다, 그리고 우리산행의 마지막 지점인 진부령에 이르는 마지막 산길이 될 것이다. 설악산은 서울 외곽에 있는 가장 인기있는 국립공원이다. 그 가장 큰 이유는 가기가 쉽다는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라, 광대한 지역이 눈부시게 아름답고 험준한 바위들과 높은 봉우리들 사이로 흐르는 물에 풍부한 미네랄을 제공하여 계곡을 풍요롭게 만든다. 우리들이 공원을 통과할 산길은 약수로 유명한 오색계곡에서 시작된다. 그곳에서 우리들은 새로운 친구 Poncho(이동균)와 함께 대청봉을 향해 능선을 걸어 올라갔다. 그 다음날 아침에 공룡능선을 따라 산행을 했다.

Andrew가 석병산에서 무전기를 손에 들고 즉석에서 강원도 Chief Logistics Officer David Sargeant(Australian)에게 여러 방향을 가리키고 있다. 그러나 그에게는 전혀 필요없는 일, 너무도 잘 알고 있는 곳이니까.

"I Hate Communists!"

The defiant cry of Lee Seung-bok, the seven year old boy who was killed along with many of his family by northern infiltrators in 1968 after refusing to accept their communist lies.
A grand and at times gruesome memorial hall stands in honour of his bravery near the town of Jinbu in Gangwon province.
These days many people have become sceptical of this story and belive it to be a myth created by the authoritarian goverment of then President Park Chang-hee.
However the memorial still stands and is very popular.
이승복의 반항적인 울부짖음,
1968년에 침투한 북괴무장공비에게 항거하다가 일가족이 무참히 살해당했으며 그는 그때 겨우 7살의 어린 소년이었다.그의 용기있는 행동(나는 공산당이 싫어요, 하고 울부짖은)에 경의를 표하기 위하여 아주 크고 때에 따라서는 위압적으로 느껴지는 추모관이 강원도 진부읍 가까이에 세워져 있다 오늘날에 와서는 많은 사람들이 이미 알려진 이 소년의 용감한 행동에 대하여는 회의적이며 당시 박정희 대통령의 권위주의적인 정부에서 만들어 낸 근거없는 이야기로 믿고 있다. 어떻든 기념비는 아직도 서 있고 많은 사람들이 찾고 있다.

월정사 위에 있는 적멸보궁,
신라때의 큰스님 자장율사가 중국에서 귀국할 때 모시고 온 부처님 진신사리를 월정사가 세워지기 전까지는 이곳에다 모셨다. 그리고 이 산이 자장율사 자신이 공부하던 중국 산서성의 청량산, 일명 오대산과 닮은 모습이어서 오대산이라고 명명했다.

Korean national parks authority close many of their trails in an effort to preserve flora and fauna under stress from a large number of hikers. Here we had to climb the peak and exit down the Sogeumgang valley to the east.
오대산국립공원 안에 있는 노인봉 위에는 양면으로 된 방첨탑이 있다. 한쪽 면에는 한자로 다른 쪽 면에는 한글로 씌어져 있다.한국국립공원 당국에서는 어느 지역, 시대의 동식물들이 등산객들 때문에 받는 스트레스로 인하여 훼손되는 것을 방지하고 보호하기 위하여 등산객들이 등산을 하지 못하도록 산의 양쪽방향에서 많은 등산로를 차단하고 있다.그래서 우리는 정상으로 올라가서 동쪽으로 소금강계곡을 빠져나와야만 했다.

Yep thats right, we're heading into the last few days of the journey.
We're currently in Seorak-san national park and tomorrow morning will head up to Daecheon-bong peak for the night and walk out along the dragons spine the following morning. Since being in the area we have been treated very well by National Park staff who have provided us with trail guides and transportation. I'd like to thank them for this excellent service.

좋아, 지난 며칠 동안 산행을 계속했다. 우리는 지금 설악산국립공원에 와 있다. 내일 아침에는 대청봉을 향해 갈 것이며 대청봉에서 밤을 지내고 다음날 아침에는 공룡능선을 따라 갈 것이다. 이곳에 있는 동안 국립공원관리소 직원들로부터 극진한 대접을 받았다. 그뿐만 아니라, 그들은 등산안내원과 차량까지도 제공해 주었다. 친절하게 대해준 그들에게 진심으로 감사한다. 이번주에 찍은 더 많은 사진을 곧 올리겠다.

This week has taken us from the coal mining city of Taebaek to within two short days walk from Odae-san national park in northern Gangwon province. Along the way we've crossed the spectacular ridge of Duta-san which feeds the famed Mureung valley in Donghae city province.
Its not only been another great week on the Daegan but this leg enables us to catch up with some well placed Gangwon chingu's; Andy, thanks for the dinner in Taebaek, t'was good to see you bro. 산 너머 저 멀리
이번주에는 태백의 석탄광산시에서 강원도의 북쪽으로 이동하여 오대산국립공원으로부터 걸어서 이틀밖에 걸리지 않는 곳까지 왔다.이번 산행에서는 동해시에 있는 이름난 무릉계곡의 수원이며 계곡을 풍요롭게 해 주는 아름다운 두타산을 횡단했다.이는 백두대간에서 보내는 또 하나의 멋진 한 주일이었을 뿐만 아니라 아주 좋은 곳에 살고 있는 강원 친구 Andy를 만날 수 있는 산행이었다. Andy, 태백에서의 저녁식사 대단히 고마워, 형을 만나게 되어 대단히 기뻤어.Baby River, 네가 너무 늙기전에 널 만나러 다시 오겠다. Dave 그리고 Uzma 내일밤 진부에서 만나자.

We met these fine gentlemen on the long leg between Pijae and Daetjae passes, and they duly fed us with kimbab rolls, Deodeok (root vegetable), MoonPies and a half kilo block of Rice cake! There was however no suggestion of parting with any of the cold cans of cass they were enjoying.

우리들은 이 멋진 신사들을 피재에서 댓재에 이르는 긴 산행 중에 만났다. 그들은 식사 때 마다 우리들에게 김밥, 더덕, 찌짐, 반 킬로그램은 충분히 될 만한 떡 덩어리를 주었다. 그러나 그들은 자신들이 즐겨 마시고 있는 시원한 카스 깡통맥주를 손에서 놓을 낌새를 보이지 않았다.(농담) 멋진 친구들의 호의에 감사한다.

The ridge between Pi-jae and Daet-jae is used in many places for farming. This beef farm encroaches right up to the ridge line. The grassland itself appears fairly unproductive and fencing very ineffective with cattle escaping with ease and apparent frequency across the trail and into the forest. The Baekdu-daegan has in recent times been recognised as an ecological park, so I can only assume that it won't be long before this practice is pushed back down the hill.

피재와 댓재 사이에 있는 능선에는 많은 농장들이 있다. 이 목장은 능선 꼭대기까지도 이어져 있다. 풀밭은 솔직히 말해서 비생산적인 불모지로 보인다. 또한 울타리도 대단히 허술해서 소들이 쉽게 자주 등산로를 건너 숲속으로 들어가는 것을 볼 수가 있다. 최근 들어 백두대간은 환경친화적인 공원으로 인식되고 있다. 따라서 이러한 시설들을 능선 아래쪽으로 옮기지 않으면 오래 견디지 못할 것이다.

The mountains of the Baekdu-daegan feed many of Korea's most beautiful valleys, including Mureung-Gegok in Donghae. Mureung valley is widely viewed as the most beautiful in all of Korea. In my time here I've visited more than a few valleys and gorges and its fair to say there is a lot of competition for the title of "best".
I've never however been in a valley on such a perfect autumn day.
Before our walk ends we look forward to visiting the Sogeumgang valley in eastern Odae-san and the Osaek valley in southern Sorak-san and probably a few more.
백두대간의 산들은 동해시에 있는 무릉계곡을 포함해서 한국의 거의 모든 계곡에 영양분을 공급하여 계곡을 아름답고 풍요롭게 하고 있다. 무릉계곡은 한국에서 제일 아름다운 계곡으로 널리 알려져 있다. 나는 그동안 보아온 다른 여러 계곡들보다도 더 많이 이 계곡에 와 보았다. 솔직하게 말한다면 ‘최고’라는 타이틀을 두고 경쟁할 만한 계곡은 다른 곳에도 많이 있다. 그러나 나는 이렇게 좋은, 눈부신 가을날에 계곡에 와 본적이 없었다.우리들의 이번 산행이 끝나기 전에 오대산의 소금강계곡과 설악산의 오색계곡과 가능하다면 더 많은 계곡을 가보고 싶다

This weekend we enjoyed relaxing at the Buseok-sa temple in the Yeongju city area.
A welcoming ceremony was organised by UNWO STEP Foundation Chairperson and ROK Tourism Ambassador Dho Young-shim to commemorate our passing of the halfway point which was attended by Yeongju city Mayor Kim Joo-Young, General Secretary of Buseok-sa temple Dosun-Sunim, Korean Tourism Organisation Tourism Product Development Director Mr.Joung Jin-su and Manager Bobby Kim, reporters and film crew of Andong MBC TV, Yonhap news agency, Korea Times and Jungang-ilbo as well as members of the Baekdu-daegan team. We all enjoyed a hearty meal at the temple and were treated to a fascinating tour of the Buseok-sa temple buildings and nearby Sosu-seowon confucian academy by Prof. David Mason. The crew then moved onto Andong city for dinner hosted by Ambassador Dho and her husband Korea Freedom League president Dr. Kwon Jung-dal before heading back to Buseok-sa to spend the night. We would like to thank everybody who attended for your support and helping to create a memorable weekend. We are now back in Taebaek city ready to hit the trail tomorrow morning.

부석사에서의 환영식

이번 주말에는 영주시 지역에 있는 부석사에서 아주 느긋하게 휴식을 했다.

이곳에서 우리들의 백두대간 종주의 중간지점 통과를 기념하기 위한 환영식이 있었다. 도영심 유엔세계관광기구(UNTWO) STEP재단 이사장이며 한국체육관광 대사가 이 환영식을 계획하고 준비했으며 우리 백두대간 팀원들뿐만 아니라 김주영 영주시장, 부석사 사무총장 도순스님, 한국관광기구의 제작개발감독 정진수씨 그리고 지배인 Bobby Kim, 안동 MBC TV 기자들, 연합통신사, Korea Times 그리고 중앙 일보사 기자들도 참석했다

우리는 절에서 배불리 실컷 먹고 David Mason 교수의 안내로 환상적인 부석사 경내와 근처에 있는 유학자 양성기관이었던 소수서원을 구경했다. 일행들은 안동시로 가서 저녁식사를 하고 부석사로 돌아가서 그날 밤을 보냈다. 저녁식사는 도영심 대사와 그녀의 남편인 권정달 한국자유총연맹 총재가 제공했다.

우리는 우리를 지원해 주고 도와주고 환영식에 참석하여 잊지 못할 인상적인 주말이 되게 해 주신 모든 분들에게 진심으로 감사한다.

이제 우리는 태백시로 돌아가서 내일 아침에 출발하는 산행 준비를 해야 한다.

Well a couple of days back Andrew and I crossed the halfway marker located crudely in the middle of a downhill track. It stated we had walked 367.325km since Cheonhwang-bong in Jiri-san national park. We didn't hang round much to celebrate that fact, just a handshake and some photos as it was already getting dark near the end of a 20km tab with no end in sight. We escaped from the ridge on darkness and got well fed by a local family who owned a minbak at the base of the ridge. The night's now in Korea are getting colder and our second half strategy is in place. Rather than add an extra 5 kilos of equipment to our 20kg packs from which we have been trundling round for the past 35 days - we have done the reverse and our now traveling in light order so that we can traverse to the mountains with speed and agility. There are some very long tabs coming up for us to acheive in sub alphine area and with laden packs our pace would become retarded and we would be forced to carry extra gear to sleep out. Now we can alight to the 30km mountain tabs when required with hastened mobility. Next week we are guests at Buseok-sa Temple near Yeongju city on the 20th of October - if anyone is interested in attending the temple stay they can contact Prof. David Mason at mntnwolf@yahoo.com. Our journey of research so far has taken us to hundreds of memorable vistas and we relish the fact that we are due to encounter many more before the walk's end in Jinbu-ryeong sometime in early November. The collection of information on the Baekdudaegan trail has been extensive and fascinating, we also look forward to working closely with our friend and colleague Prof. Mason when disseminating all that information for the trail guide book.

In the past week the trail has taken us from Munjang-dae in Songni-san national park through to the gates of Mungyeong saejae, where the ancient highway from Busan in the south-east to Seoul in the north-east crossed the Baekdu-daegan.
This area has some of the most rugged land on the peninsula; tall, bald peaks rise sharply from the ridge making for some challenging bouldering and fairly slow going!

속리산에서 월악산을 향해
지난주에는 속리산국립공원 문장대에서 문경새재의 관문들을 통과하는 산행이었다. 거기에는 동남쪽의 부산에서 동북쪽의 서울로 가는 옛 국도가 백두대간을 가로 지르고 있다.이지역은 한반도에서 가장 바위가 많은 험한 곳 중 하나이다. ; 능선에서는 높은 벌거숭이(바위) 봉우리들이 날카롭게 솟아있어 아주 힘겹게 그것을 기어올라야 했고 따라서 발길은 느려지지 않을 수가 없었다.

The end of the walking week is here again, a week blessed with fine weather enabling us to cover over 80 mountain kilometres including 15 peaks and 10 mountain passes from the town of Chupung-ryeong through to the northern end of Songni-san national park.

Our first day back into the walk saw us cross the 200km point. This magic moment was celebrated on 502bong (peak of 502 metres)just north of Chupungryeong town, which is apparently 199.7km from the Summit of Cheonhwang-bong, our start point in Jiri-san national park.

멋진 사진 찍을 수 있었던 일주일.

또 한 주의 산행을 마쳤다. 오랜만에 좋은 날씨로 축복받은 일주일이었다.

날씨가 좋아 추풍령읍에서 속리산국립공원의 북쪽 끝까지 15개의 봉우리와 10개의 재를 넘어 산길 80km를 거침없이 종주할 수 있었다.

다시 산행을 시작하던 날, 우리들은 출발지로부터 200km지점을 통과하고 있다는 것을 알았다. 첫 출발지점인 지리산국립공원 천왕봉 정상으로부터 정확히 199.7km가 되는 곳에 있는 봉우리이며 추풍령읍 바로 북쪽에 있는 502봉(502m고지)에서 이 감격적인 순간을 자축했다.

Saturday again and we're in Gimcheon city, North Gyeongsang province, about 200km into the journey.
Its been a difficult week weather-wise starting on Sunday night with the arrival of Typhoon Nari, which ripped through Cheju Island and brought a lot of rain into the mountains.
Luckily we'd seen the news and were safe in a Minbak (guesthouse), at Sosa-jae pass, 10km north of Dogyu-san national park. We've stayed in a few minbak over the past couple of weeks, but the one at Sosa-jae will be remembered. From the trail it looked like a pleasant country home, but we were led to a basement room which backed onto the chicken and rabbit hutch and had active beehives on either side of the door. Not ideal but the rain was biblical so we paid the ambitious price for the room and saw the storm out with beer and scrabble, which Roger has taken a possibly unpassable 11-2 lead in (largely due to the fact that my casio digictionary equipped with the "Oxford advanced learners dictionary", the judge of all disputes, includes every vulgarity in the english language but precious few of the scientific terms which form the basis of my natural game).

Monday morning we woke to clear skies in Sosa-jae and climbed over the peaks of Samdo-bong (1250m) and Daedeok-san (1290m) on the way to Deoksan-jae (pass).

Deoksan-jae has a huge, new obelisk Baekdu-daegan monument. In the past 2 weeks we have noticed these structures on most passes and notable peaks along the trail. They have all been erected in the past year.

After a fine day Monday we woke to more rain Tuesday and began a huge day of walking northward to Samdo-bong (1172m) where we planned to camp on the summit. By the time we got there the weather had developed into a full on storm so we dropped off the ridge and spent the night in the home of Mr.Kim Yong-won in the village of Hae-in. Mr.Kim is an accomplished mountaineer who has climbed in many different countries. In 2003 he led the "Korea Youth Wild Places Expedition" to Kenya. He has also climbed Baekdu-san, the great mountain on the Korean/Chinese border, and the unreachable end of this ridge we're walking. Mr.Kim climbed Baekdu-san in the middle of winter, from the Chinese side of course.
Mr.Kim's home, Hae-in Sanjang, is an organised clutter of mountaineering tools, photos, books and his handmade walnut furniture. He offers accomodation year round and in the summer has barbecue tables in the mountain stream which flows around the house. At other times his 83 year old mother, who smokes 6 inch long cigarrettes which she proudly claims have never made her cough, cooks a great meal of mountain veges and rice.

The punishment for dropping off the Baekdu-daegan is the mean climb back up the face, which we spent all morning doing before heading to Huiju-bong and Udu-ryeong (pass).

The next morning of walking led us to Hwangak-san, an impressive peak which looks over Gimcheon city to the east. On the eastern face of Hwangak-san lies the temple of Jikji-sa where we were planning to spend the night. Unfortunately they started Haengja novice monk training that day so all the beds were full and we pushed on to Gwaebang-ryeong mountain pass.

A long day of walking led us to Gwaebang-ryeong pass and into a party.
Gwaebang-ryeong was the pass scholars used to take on the way north to take the national examination, it was also the scene of fierce fighting during the Imjin japanese invasion, where General Park E-ryong defeated the invaders. A shrine to General Park, Hwanguisa, is about 1km to the north.
The pass is now home to Baek Gi-su and his wife Jeon Yeong-ae who are building a "Live cafe" and minbak where hikers and travellers can eat, drink and listen to Gisu's guitar. We had a good night drinking soju-beer cocktails, eating raw trout and trying to sing old 트로트(trot) music classics. Perfect preperation for the arduos leg to Chupung-ryeong pass the next day.

Our final day for the week was a tough walk across difficult terrain to the town of Chupung-ryeong, where we were greeted by friendly farmers in the middle of the grape, pear and apple harvest.

태풍과 그 여파

다시 토요일이다. 우리가 산행을 처음 출발한 곳에서 약 200km 되는 경상북도 김천시에 와 있다. 날씨를 예측하기 힘든 일주일이어서 고생이 심했다.

제주도를 강타하고 산악지대에 많은 비를 몰고 온 태풍 ‘나리’가 올라오던 일요일에 출발을 했다. 다행히도 우리는 태풍이 올라온다는 소식을 듣고 덕유산 국립공원에서 북쪽으로 10km쯤 떨어진 소사재에 있는 민박집에서 안전하게 지낼 수 있었다. 지난 2,3주 동안 여러 민박집에서 머문 적이 있었지만 이번 민박집은 영원히 잊지 못할 것이다

산에서 보니 쾌적한 시골집처럼 보여서 그 집에서 하룻밤 자기로 하고 내려갔더니 집주인이 우리를 지하실 방으로 안내했다. 방 바로 뒤편에는 닭장과 토끼장이 있고 문 양편에는 벌통이 있어 벌들이 정신없이 들락거리고 있었다. 이 끔찍한 환경에 조금도 머물고 싶은 마음은 없었지만, 비는 ‘노아의 홍수’를 다시 보여줄 것처럼 억수로 퍼부어서 진퇴양난. 지나치다고 생각되는 방값을 지불하고 투숙했다. 비바람이 몰아치는 밖을 내다보며 우리 둘은 맥주를 마시며 말장난으로 시간을 보냈다. (Roger는 말로써 나를 골려주었다. 그래서 나는 ‘당신이 가지고 있는 사전에는 점잖은 말은 없고 나쁜 말만 있구나.’ 하고 응수했다. 물론 농담)

월요일 아침. 잠에서 깨어 밖을 내다보니 소사재 위로 맑게 갠 하늘이 보였다. 가벼운 마음으로 덕산재 고갯길로 가는 도중에 있는 삼도봉(1250m)과 대덕산(1290m)으로 올라갔다. 덕산재에는 방첨탑이 있는 아주 큰 백두대간 기념비가 새로 세워져 있었다. 지난 2주 동안 산행을 하면서 이름난 봉우리나 산길에 있는 이런 구조물들을 많이 보았다. 그 구조물들은 모두가 지난 몇 해 동안에 세워진 것들이다.

맑은 월요일이 지나가고 화요일은 일어날 때부터 비가 많이 내렸다. 그러나 삼도봉(1172m)을 향해 북으로 힘겨운 산행을 시작했다.

삼도봉 정상에서 캠프를 칠 계획이었으나 우리가 정상에 도착했을 때 날씨는 급변해서 태풍이 몰아쳐 왔다. 우리들은 서둘러 능선에서 내려와 해인마을에 있는 김영원씨 집에서 그날 밤을 지냈다.

김씨는 베테랑 등산가로서 외국의 여러 유명한 산들을 등반했고 2003년에는 ‘한국청년 미개척지 탐사대’ 팀을 이끌고 아프리카 케냐에도 다녀왔다. 우리가 산행하고 있는 백두대간의 마지막 부분인, 그러나 거기까지는 갈 수 없는, 중국과 한국의 국경지대에 있는 백두산에도 한겨울에 중국을 통해서 등반을 했다고 한다.

김씨의 집인 해인산장에는 등산장구, 사진, 책, 그가 직접 손으로 만든 호두나무 가구들이 짜임새 있고 다채롭게 진열되어 있었다. 연중 언제라도 숙박을 할 수가 있으며 여름철에는 그의 집 옆을 흐르는 개울가 계곡에서 바비큐도 즐길 수 있도록 테이블이 준비되어 있었다.

김씨는 83세의 노모를 모시고 있는데 언제나 6인치나 되는 긴 시가레트를 피운다. 그런데도 기침 한번 하지 않는다고 자랑한다. 바비큐를 하지 않을 때에는 그 노모가 산나물과 밥만으로도 맛있는 식사를 제공한다.

백두대간에서 하산한다는 것은 다시 능선으로 올라가야 하는 벌이 따르게 마련이다. 우리들은 휘주봉과 우두령으로 가기 위해 오전 내내 능선으로 올라가는 수고를 감수해야만 했다.

다음날 아침에는 동으로 멀리 김천시를 바라볼 수 있는 인상 깊은 봉우리인 황악산으로 갔다. 황악산의 동쪽에 있는 직지사에서 그날 밤을 지낼 계획이었다. 불행하게도 그날부터 직지사에서는 행자스님수련회가 시작되어 모든 방들이 꽉 차서 여유가 없었다. 어쩔 수 없이 우리는 괘방령을 향해 서둘러 떠나야만 했다. 종일 걸어서 괘방령 산길로 들어가 다른 등산객들의 무리와 어울렸다.

괘방령은 옛 선비들이 한양으로 과거보러 가던 고갯길이다. 또한 임진왜란 때 일본군과 격렬하게 싸웠던 곳이기도 하다. 그곳에서 박이룡장군이 침략군을 물리쳤다. 박 장군의 사당이 있는 황귀사는 거기서 1km 정도 북쪽에 있다.

산길에는 지금 백기수씨와 그의 부인 전영애씨가 운영하는 카페와 민박집이 있었다. 그곳에서 등산객과 여행자들은 먹고 마시며 기수씨의 기타연주도 들을 수 있다. 우리들은 소주와 맥주의 칵테일도 마시며 송어회도 먹고 고상한 옛 트로트 음악도 부르며 멋진 밤을 보냈다. 내일 추풍령을 넘어야 하는 힘든 산행을 위해 완벽한 준비를 해야만 했다.

이번 주 산행의 마지막 날은 추풍령으로 가는 아주 험난한 산을 넘어야 하는 힘든 산행이었다. 추풍령에서는 포도, 배, 사과를 한창 수확 중이었고 농부들은 고맙게도 우리를 환대해 주었다.

Well its been a week of walking since we left Jiri-san national park and headed into the quiet hills of rural South Korea. The trail for this leg starts at the village of Gajae in the Namwon city area, where this impressive monument to the Baekdudaegan trail has been erected. See video "Baekdu-daegan monument" below.

지리산 국립공원을 떠나서 다시 조용한 산속으로 들어온 후 1주일이 지났다. 이번 산행은 남원시 근처에 있는 가재마을에서 시작했다. 그곳에는 백두대간 산행길에 대한 장엄한 기념비가 세워져 있다.

From Gajae we entered the pine forests of Sujeong-bong peak (804m), and for the rest of the day walked the ridge marking the northern borders of Namwon city.
Namwon promotes itself as the "city of love" here in Korea, celebrating the ancient love story of Chunhyang. Chunhyang was a young woman of rare beauty quite in love with a man who was away on government business. In his absence a local government official took advantage of her and forced her into marriage. Upon his return the young man used his authority to right the wrong and kill the immoral man, giving the story a happy ending. It's debatable whether or not the story is true but the city takes it seriously, even the manhole covers in the street are elaborately inscribed with "Namwon city of Love", quite the souvenir if you can get one, and every year Namwon holds the Chunyang festival, apparently the oldest festival in the country.

]우리들은 가재마을에서 수정봉(804m)의 소나무숲 속으로 들어가 그날의 휴식을 위해 남원시의 북쪽경계라는 표지가 있는 능선을 걸었다. 남원시에서는 ‘사랑의 도시’라는 이미지를 부각시키며 시의 발전과 활성화를 위해 한국의 대표적 고전연애소설인 <춘향전>의 주인공을 기리는 ‘춘향제’가 한창이었다. 춘향은 뛰어난 미인으로 한양에 간 젊은 청년 이도령과 사랑에 푹 빠져 있었다. 그 청년이 없는 동안 새로 부임한 원님이 권력을 이용해서 춘향에게 수청을 들도록 강요하고 옥에 가두고 협박도 했으나 끝까지 거절했다.

한양에 간 그 젊은이는 과거에 급제하여 암행어사로 남원에 돌아와 부정을 바로잡고 부도덕하고 권력을 남용한 사또는 법에 의거 처벌하고 춘향이와 해피엔딩으로 끝나는 소설이다. 사실인지 아닌지는 논쟁의 여지가 있지만 남원시에서는 아주 진지하고 화려하게 행사를 거행하고 있다.

심지어 거리의 맨홀 뚜껑에도 ‘사랑의 도시 남원’이라고 새겨져 있어 이 도시가 얼마나 <춘향전>에 표현된 사랑을 도시 이미지로 사용하려고 하는가를 알 수 있었다.

기념품도 꼭 하나 사 두자.

해마다 남원시에서는 ‘춘향제’가 열리며 한국에서 가장 오래된 축제로 알려져 있다.

From Sujeong-bong the ridge snakes its way north toward Juji-sa temple, where we stopped for rest and fresh spring water, there was no-one home but the barking temple dog, we'd seen the monk earlier up the trail helping to build a flight of stairs to aide hikers on the slippery slopes of Sujeong-bong.

우리는 휴식도 취하고 시원한 샘물도 받기 위해 주지사에 들렸으나

사람은 아무도 없고 절에서 기르는 개가 시끄럽게 짖으며 우리를 맞이했다.

Yeowon-jae pass

The trail descends and meets highway 24 at Yeowon-jae pass, usually a quiet link between the small town of Unbong to the east and Ganggi-ri village to the west. All changed just after Roger took his next step out onto the road and two patrol bikes rolled up followed by two police cars sirens blaring, 15 vans emblazoned with sponsors stickers and finally 100 cyclists from around the world riding in the "Tour de Korea".

On the northern side of the road we climbed the mountain of Gonam-san and followed the ridge left to the small village of Maeyo-maeul. It was on dark, there was no restaurant and no obvious accomodation. All the houses were empty and the locals, all middle aged and older, were in the midst of a massive party in the town hall. A big Korean drum was being beaten and the woman were singing haunting melodies that sounded similiar to those of native North Americans, everybody was having quite a time and drinking plenty of Makoli; a thick, sweet and highly effective rice wine favored by rural and aged Koreans. We were made to feel at home and put up for the night in their awesome pagoda. See video "Maeyo village hotel" and "The Ribbon Tree".

우리가 절에 도착하기 조금 전에 한 스님을 만났는데 그 분이 이 절의 스님인 것 같았다. 그 스님은 등산객들이 수정봉을 오를 때 미끄러운 비탈길을 올라가야 하므로 그들의 편의를 위해 계단을 만드는 일을 도와주려고 아침 일찍 산으로 올라가는 길이었다.

이 산길은 계속 내려가면 여원재 고갯길에서 24번 국도와 만나고 동으로 운봉읍과 서쪽 강기리 사이를 연결하고 있다.

그런데 일반적으로 고요한 이 산길이 Roger가 한발을 내 딛자마자 모든 것이 갑자기 요란하게 변해버렸다.

두 대의 경찰순찰 오토바이가 달려오고 이어서 두 대의 경찰차가 사이렌을 울리며 따라오고 또 후원자들의 스티커로 장식한 15대의 밴(승합차)이 따라오고 마지막으로 세계 각국에서 온 100여명의 자전거 여행자들이 ‘한국관광’이라는 깃발을 달고 따라오고 있었다.

산에서 조용히 내려오던 두 유랑자에게는 너무나 갑작스런 광경이었다. 우리는 다시 도로의 북쪽에 있는 고남산으로 올라가 매요마을을 향해 왼쪽으로 나 있는 능선을 따라 걸었다.

날씨는 어두웠고 마을에는 식당도 이렇다 할 숙박시설도 없었다. 모든 집들은 비어있었고 주민들은 모두 마을회관에 모여 큰 파티를 하고 있었다, 그들은 모두 중년이거나 또는 그 이상으로 나이가 많은 사람들이었다.

한 여인이 큰 북을 치면서 북아메리카 원주민들의 멜로디와 비슷하게 들리는, 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 멜로디를 노래 부르고 있었다. 모두들 꽤 오랫동안 막걸리를 마시고 있었다. 막걸리는 걸쭉하고 달콤하고 값도 아주 싼, 쌀로 만든 술이며 나이 많은 시골 사람들이 즐겨 마신다. 그 정다운 분위기는 마치 우리집에 온 느낌이 들게 했다. 그리고 그날 밤을 우리는 그 멋진 마을회관에서 잤다.

Crossing expressway 88.

Olympic Expressway 88 connects the major cities of Daegu to the North-east in north Gyeongsang province and Gwangju in South Jeolla province and crosses the Baekdu-daegan just north of Maeyo village.
Walking on the expressway is strictly prohibited, but the Baekdu-daegan walker seems to be exempt from these rules.

88올림픽고속도로는 동북쪽으로 경상북도 대구와 남쪽으로 전라남도 광주와 같은 대도시를 연결하며 매요마을의 바로 북쪽에서 백두대간을 가로질러 가고 있다. 고속도로를 걷는다는 것은 엄격히 금지되어 있지만 백두대간 산행객들에게는 이러한 규정이 면제되는 것처럼 보이기도 한다.

Amak fortress

The Amak fortress was built around the northern ridge of Amak-san and was the scene of battle between the Shilla and Baekje armies. Pottery from this era is still piled among the ruins.
Below the fortress is the pass of Bokseonge-jae, where we ended another day at the village of Chijae-maul where we had beers with the friendly grape farmers of the area at the supermarket/pub. Across the road from Chijae-maeul is the village of Heungbu-mauel, home of the younger brother in the classic korean folktale Nolbu and Heungbu which you can read here

아막산성은 아막산의 북쪽능선 둘레에 있고 산성에는 신라와 백제 군사들의 전투장면이 그려져 있다. 토기를 구워내던 가마터들은 이미 폐허가 되어 버렸지만 아직도 토기들이 많이 쌓여 있는 것을 볼 수가 있었다. 산성 아래에는 복성게재를 넘어가는 길이 있고 그곳에 있는 치재마을에서 또 하루를 끝내기로 했다. 그 마을에 사는 친절한 포도밭 주인과 슈퍼마켓에서 맥주도 한잔 했다. 치재마을의 도로 건너편에는 한국 고전설화 <흥부전>에 나오는 주인공 흥부의 집이 있었던 ‘흥부마을’이 있다. 당신도 그 책을 읽어 볼 수가 있을 것이다. 동으로는 치재마을 위쪽에 봉화산이 있고 서로는 장수읍이 있다

We spent the night on this awesome peak (1278m), in a remote part of the peninsula. The stars seemed close enough to touch...a rare sight in Korea.

우리들은 반도의 외딴곳에 있는 이 거대한 봉우리(1,278m)에서 또 하룻밤을 보냈다. 별들은 손에 잡힐 듯 아주 가까이 보였으며 지금까지 한국에서는 보기 드문 아름다운 광경이었다.

Next morning we dropped off the ridge to visit the temples of Mokgye-am and Sangyeon-dae on Baekeun-san's southern face.
We were treated to a welcome meal by the friendly monks of Sangyeon-dae.

다음날 아침 우리는 백은산의 남쪽기슭에 있는 목계암과 상연대를 방문하기 위해 능선 아래로 내려갔다. 상연대의 친절한 스님들로부터 환영의 식사대접을 받았다.

And now we find ourselves in Dogyu-san national park, an awesome area with high rugged peaks and open ridges. We've spent a good couple of days exploring the park and look forward to getting back on the trail tomorrow (sunday) morning.

그리고 지금은 덕유산국립공원에 와 있다.

덕유산국립공원은 바위투성이의 높은 봉우리와 탁 트인 산등성이들로 이루어진 웅장한 산이다. 우리들은 2,3일간 덕유산국립공원을 답사하면서 이곳에서 지내고 내일(일요일)아침에 산행을 다시 시작할 것이다. 속리산 국립공원과 그곳을 지나 북으로 가는 산행 중에 우리가 어떻게 해야 할 것인가를 검토하기 위해, 한 일주일쯤이 지난 현재 시점에서 전면적으로 재점검할 필요성을 느낀다.

지리산

Jiri-san has eight shelters, three of which we stayed in as we walked through the park. Ther price for a night is 7000 won, blankets are available for hire, they have a store selling basic trail food and are situated near fresh water springs.
The shelters have electricity which is turned off at 9pm and are centrally heated year round, which we found a little strange on the warm early september nights we spent in them. The shelters can be very busy, especially on weekends, and earplugs are recommended for those sensitive to the sound of 100 men snoring in unison.

지리산국립공원에는 여덟 개의 대피소가 있다. 우리는 그동안 세 곳의 대피소에서 잠을 잤다. 하룻밤 숙박비는 7,000원 담요는 임대가 가능하다. 그곳에는 산행중에 필요한 기본적인 식품을 파는 상점이 있고 근처에는 맑은 샘물도 있어 식수는 걱정하지 않아도 된다.

대피소에는 전기가 있는데 아쉽게도 밤 9시에는 꺼버린다. 그리고 일 년 내내 중앙집중식 난방을 하고 있어 9월 초순의 더운 밤에도 난방중인 방에서 잔다는 것이 약간 이상하게 생각되었다.

특히 주말의 대피소는 대단히 붐빈다. 잠을 잘 때는 100여명이나 되는 많은 사람들이 한꺼번에 코를 고는 소리는 그야말로 장관이지만 고역이기도 하다. 이 소리에 잠을 못 이루는 예민한 사람들에게는 귀마개를 권하기도 한다.

Well we're through Jiri-san and are spending a night in Gochon village in the Namwon city area. We hoped to have a lot of photos to post of Jiri-san but due to an unfortunate incident involving the Post office's free computer (of which we were very grateful) many have been lost.
We did take some video footage in the park, three of which are posted below. We are very new to this and hope to get better as we move along the trail. Please forgive us any errors in pronunciation etc.
We leave tomorrow morning into a fairly isolated area for the next six days or so, hopefully after that we'll have a lot of photos and maybe some more video.

우리들은 지리산을 완주하고 남원지역에 있는 고촌마을에서 하룻밤을 보내고 있다.

지리산에서 찍은 많은 사진들을 블로그에 올리려고 했으나 유감스럽게도 이곳 우체국에서 무료로 제공해준 컴퓨터에 고장이 생겨 많은 자료를 잃고 말았다. （그러나 우체국직원들의 친절에는 정말 감사하게 생각한다.）

지리산 국립공원에서 촬영한 몇 편의 비디오화면이 있는데 그 중에서 세 편을 우선 아래에 올린다.

우리 모두 비디오촬영은 처음 하는 일이라 매우 서툴렀지만 산행을 계속하는 동안에 점점 익숙해질 것이라 믿으며 화면　속에서 행여 우리들의 발음이나 또 다른 실수가 있더라도 널리 이해해 주시기 바란다.

우리 일행은 6일 정도의 일정으로 내일 아침에는 더 험난한 길을 향해 떠날 것이다.

We have spent three wet days in this sector of Jirisan NP, but with splendid scenery and the occasional glimpse of deep mountain valleys below us as we walk above the rain clouds along the ridge. 지리산

노고단 아래 교차로에서 이 글을 씁니다.

우리들은 비 내리는 사흘을 지리산국립공원에서 보냈습니다.

그러나 멋진 경치를 보며, 또 발아래로 비구름이 깔려있는 선계(산마루)를 걸으며,

이따금씩 내려다보이는 깊은 계곡의 꿈속 같은 풍경도 어렴풋이 느낄 수 있었습니다.

국립공원 지리산은 날씨 때문에 오늘은 아쉽게도 입산금지입니다.

The time has come

Alright we're here!
Tonight we sleep in Jinju city, Gyeongsangnam-do province and will take the city bus to Jungsan-ri, our starting point in Jiri-san national park tomorrow morning.
A launching event has been planned for Sunday morning at the trail head before we head slowly up the trail.
David Mason has written details of the launching event on the marmot's hole site which can be read here
Jiri-san is Korea's oldest designated and largest national park covering over 470 sq/km; its highest peak Cheonhwang-bong (1915m) is the tallest on mainland South Korea and we are both looking forward to the 4 days we will spend crossing its ridge line and drinking its clear waters.

때는 왔다.

모든 준비 완료!

오늘 밤 우리는 경상남도 진주시에서 자고 내일 아침에 산행의 출발지인 지리산 국립공원

중산리로 시외버스를 타고 갈 예정이다.

일요일 아침에 중산리에서 출정식을 마치고 바로 산행을 시작할 것이다.

David Mason씨가 우리의 출정식(발대식)에 대하여 ‘the marmot's hole site’에 자세하게 올려놓았다. 물론 이 사이트에서도 읽을 수 있다.

지리산은 한국에서 제일 먼저 지정된 가장 큰 국립공원으로 그 넓이가 470평방킬로미터나 되며 가장 높은 천왕봉(1,915m)은 남한에서 한라산 다음가는 높은 봉우리이다.

우리 두 사람은 4일 동안 지리산을 넘으면서 맑은 공기와 오염되지 않은 자연수를 마실 수 있다는 큰 기대에 가슴 설레고 있다.

David씨가 운영하는 훌륭한 웹 페이지인 ‘지리산 페이지’와 한국등산연맹 대표 Shawn Morrissey씨의 기사 ‘고요함을 찾아서’를 찾아서 읽는다면 이 위대한 지리산에 대해서 많은 것을 배울 수 있을 것이다.

우리는 한국의 산골에서 인터넷 접속이 어렵겠지만 새로운 사진과 비디오로 이 사이트를 보다 새로운 내용으로 업데이트하기 위해 최선을 다할 것이다.

It is not confirmed, but a launching ceremony for the Baekdu daegan expedition has been penciled in at Jungsan-ri (start point) in Jirisan NP for Sunday 2nd September 2007 at 0900hrs. Notable local dignitaries and the Ambassador of Tourism Madame Dho and the New Zealand Ambassador to Korea, Jane Coombes are possibly to attend. Anyone who is interested in the walk is welcome to attend. Will keep you posted as details develop.

누군가가 당신에게 한국의 지형에 대해 설명해 보라고 한다면, 그것은 골무의 한쪽을 눌러 터뜨려 찢어진 쪽이 점점 엷어져서 납작하게 하고 다른 한쪽은 볼록하게 놓아둔 것과 같은 모양이라고 말해 보라

　한반도의 위성사진을 보면 한쪽을 터뜨려 눌러놓은 골무와 같은 독특한 모양이라는 것을 분명히 알 수 있을 것이다. 외국여행에 매료된 많은 사람들처럼 좀 더 오랫동안 면밀하게 관찰해 본다면 다른 지형들과는 달리 현저하게 독특한 모양이라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 특히 위성에서 찍은 사진을 두고 볼 때, 백두대간을 중심으로 펼쳐진 심한 굴곡과 작은 산맥들의 모습이 마치 사나운 개들이 싸우면서 할퀴어 버린 흉한 자국처럼 보이기도 할 것이다.

　백두대간은 세계에서 가장 높은 화산분화구의 하나인 백두산 천지에서 시작되며 한국의 신화적인 발상지인 백두산은 북한과 중국의 국경지대를 이루고 있다.

　여기서 시작되는 백두대간은 혹은 비틀어지고 혹은 회오리를 만들면서 사나운 형세로 동해안을 따라 태백산맥을 만들고 다시 미친 듯이 남쪽으로 거침없이 내달려 아름다운 설악산, 오대산국립공원을 통과한다. 계속해서 남하하면 과거에 분단의 상징이었던 38선과 만난다. 미련 없이 계속해서 내려오면 서쪽으로 방향을 바꿔 옥신각신 실랑이를 하듯 굽이치며 소백산맥을 통과한다.

　한반도의 중간쯤에서 물결치듯이 다시 남으로 내려가서 소백산맥의 한 부분인 속리산, 덕유산국립공원을 지난다. 이어 백두산으로부터 1,625㎞ 지점에 남한에서 한라산 다음가는 높은 봉우리, 해발 1,915m인 지리산 천왕봉에서 힘차게 솟았다가 홀연 끝이 난다.

　앞에서 말한 바와 같이 개의 이빨로 할퀸 자국 같은 이 지형이 한국인들이 친근하게 알고 있는, 줄기차게 이어져 내려온 분수령 백두대간이다.

　백두대간은 ‘백두산에서 지리산까지 내달리는 큰 줄기(白頭大幹)’ 라는 뜻이며 한반도를 세로로 사슬처럼 끊임없이 뻗어 내린 산악지대를 말한다. 그것은 이 나라를 동과 서로 나누어 주는 분수령이며 주민들에게는 환경친화적인 삶을 제공하는 근원이 된다. 이곳을 터전으로 활동하고 있는, 여러 신령들을 섬기는 무속인들　에게는 아주 소중하며 신성한 지역이기도 하다.

백두대간에 대한 인식은 사회적, 과학적, 전통적, 민족주의적 논쟁의 결과로 이미 올바르게　정립되었다.

전통적이고 넓은 의미로 정의한다면 백두대간은 한반도를 지칭한다. 그것은 한반도에 활력을 주는 원천이 되어 지속적으로 공기, 물, 흙, 음식과 사람들을 기름지고 풍요롭게 한다.

　한국인들의 일상생활에 깊이 뿌리박은 풍수지리설에 의하면 백두대간에 흐르는 기의 흐름을 방해하거나 중단시킨다면 한반도에 액운이 닥칠 것이라고 알려져 왔는데 오늘날까지 많은 사람들은 이 사실을 믿고 있다. 이런 관점에서 설명한다면 백두대간은 한민족으로부터 항상 살아 움직이며 자신들에게 행복과 불행을 가져다주는 두렵고 신령스러운 존재인 것이다.

　백두대간 산행은 한국전쟁 이후부터 소수의 전문산악인들에 의해 계속되어 왔지만 특히 최근에 이르러서는 계절에 관계없이 한국인들이 시도하는 대표적인 원거리 산행코스로 자리 잡았다.

비록 현재는 남한지역에서만 가능하지만, 백두대간을 종주한다는 것은 인간의 무한한 가능성에 도전하는 자랑스러운 일이라 할 수 있으며, 백두대간이라는 거대한 생명체가 발산하는 아주 ‘신비로운 기운’이 그들의 몸속으로 스며든다고 체험자들은 말하고 있다. 이러한 아직은 밝혀지지 않은 ‘신비로운 기운’에 대해서는 많은 사람들이 연구를 진행하고 있는 중이다.

이들에게 있어서 백두대간은 장엄하고 매력적인 지리적 공간일 뿐만 아니라, 그것에 대한 초월적 개념의 근원이 되는 실질적이고도 영적인 존재인 것이다. 학자들의 연구에 의하면 이러한 개념의 근원은 멀리 9세기 말까지 더듬어 올라가 볼 수가 있다고 한다.

　오늘날 야심찬 한국에 있어서 백두대간은 한민족에게 우뚝 솟은 훌륭한 상(像)으로 남아있고 하나의 거대한 산맥 또는 한국의 상징이라는 개념으로 존재한다.

금년 9월에 뉴질랜드 친구 Andrew Douch 와 함께 백두대간의 남한지역 690㎞를 주파할 계획이다. 우리들은 단순히 장거리 산행을 한다는 기쁨뿐만 아니라, 비범하고 경이로운 풍경과 다른 여러 가지를 구경하고 체험할 수 있는 좋은 기회라고 생각하고 이 산행을 감행하려고 한다.

또한 앞으로 찾아올 외국등산객들의 편의를 위해 산길을 따라 필요한 데이터를 수집하고 기록해서 구체적인 정보를 제공할 계획이다.

백두대간 산행에 대한 영문안내서를 만드는 목적은 너무나 명백하다. 왜냐하면 현재까지 그런 정보책자가 어디에도 없기 때문이다.

내가 이 일에 대해 처음으로 관심을 가진 것은 작년 6월 고향 뉴질랜드에서 휴가차 한국에 왔을 때이다. 그때까지 백두대간을 산행할 의도는 없었다. 한국에 와서 몇몇 친구들과 이야기하다 보니 참 좋은 아이디어라고 생각되었다. 그래서 6월의 불볕더위를 무릅쓰고 30일간 산행을 하던 중 날씨가 무더운 장마철로 바뀌며 계속되는 비로 인해 350㎞쯤 지난 중간지점에서 아쉽게도 중단하고 말았다.

그것은 아주 힘든 산행이었는데 가장 큰 이유는 산행을 시도할 적절한 시기가 아니었다는 점이다. 그러나 나는 이미 반쯤 마친 산행에서 대단한 감명과 감동을 받았다.

그것은 보다 많은 외국인들이 백두대간을 산행할 때 꼭 필요한 내용을 알려 주어야겠다는 생각이 들게 했다. 곧 그 준비에 착수했다. 반이나 한 일을 미루어 둘 이유가 없었던 것이다.

350km를 이미 걷고 난 나는 내가 걸어가는 고도에 따라 변해가는 어떤 놀랄만하고 도전적인 풍경 속으로 내 자신이 끌려 들어갔다는 느낌이었다. 조용하고 울창한 푸른 숲을 벗어나 훤히 트인 산등성이에 나와 서면 저 멀리 끝없이 뻗어 있는 산과 계곡들(골무이론과 꼭 같은)이 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 가까운 곳으로 하루 등산을 하는 한국인들은 항상 나를 반갑게 맞아주었다.

특히 국립공원 산행 중에는 식사도 같이 할 정도로 헤아릴 수 없는 많은 환대를 해 주었고 친절하게 대해 주었다. 그들이 대접하는 것은 대부분의 경우 산행 때 항상 휴대하고 다니는 참치통조림, 생수, 커피, 사탕(캔디) 등이었다.

다양하고 웅장한 경치는 별문제로 하고 산행 중에 있었던 일로 실제로 내게 특별히 인상 깊었던 일은 앞으로 당신들도 지나가게 될 소도시들을 찾을 기회가 있었다는 것이다. 산 속에서 자지 않을 때는 이런 마을들을 찾곤 했다. 백두대간에서도 찾았는데 보통 산마루의 양쪽 어느 방향으로든 1,2km 정도 내려가면 마을이 있었다.

산길에서 교차로에 있는 표지판을 보고 왼쪽이냐 오른쪽이냐 단순하게 빨리 결정을 해도 산 아래 어떤 마을이든지 찾아갈 수가 있었다.

이러한 곳에 내가 나타난다는 것은 나로서는 언제나 가장 인상적인 일이었다. 멀고 먼 여로에서 벗어나 차량도 없이 걸어서 다니는 털투성이에 냄새나고 비에 젖은 이국 나그네. 이런 희한한 모습으로 나는 민박집을 찾고 시원한 맥주를 구하기 위해 마을 주위를 돌아다니곤 했다. 그곳 주민들은 내가 한국에 호감을 가진 뉴질랜드인이며 백두대간을 종주중이라고 몇 마디 아는 서툰 한국말로 하는 내말을 겨우 알아들은 후에는 곧 나를 반겨주었다.

많은 사람들은 내 서툰 한국말을 듣고는 폭소를 하며 굉장히 재미있어 한다. 나 역시 매우 재미있는 일이었고 그들의 맑고 밝은 마음씨는 언제나 내 마음속에 깊이 새겨져 있다.

그것은 진실로 내 마음에 와 닿는 소박하고 밝은 마을사람들과 어울리는 순간이었다. 때로는 만사가 귀찮은 듯 무표정하게 보이는 늙은 농부도 당신이 친절하게 접근을 한다면 빠른 속력으로 회전하는 그의 제초기처럼 순간적으로 표정이 확 바뀌면서 희색이 만면한, 치아가 없는 독특한 모습의 밝은 웃음을 대하게 될 것이다. 시골학교 어린이에 대한 호기심도 생겨날 것이며, 식당, 상점, 민박집 등에서 당신은 아주 친절한 한국인의 서비스를 받을 수 있을 것이다.

이름을 잊어버린 조그마한 시골마을의 구석진 상점 밖에서 별이 총총한 무더운 밤 귀뚜라미가 시끄럽게 울어대는 소리를 들으며 마시는 시원한 맥주 한잔은 다리의 피로를 푸는 데는 아주 그만이었다.

이러한 마을에는 수백 년 동안 사람들이 살아왔지만 한국전쟁으로 폐허가 되었다. 전쟁 후겨우 55년 동안 마을은 재건되었고 더 발전하고 있다. 걸어서 한국을 본다는 것은 아주 훌륭한 방법이며 이러한 마을에서 한국의 ‘독특한 무엇’을 느낄 수 있다. 그리고 당신이 찾는 마을의 가까운 곳에는 PC방이 있어 언제든지 바깥세상과 연락이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 이러한 마을에서 2,3일 푹 쉬고 난 후에 다시 산행을 계속한다는 것은 언제나 매력적인 일이다. 전반적으로 멋진 여행이었고 산행에 보다 알맞은 시기를 택해서 한국에 돌아와 전 구간을 다시 종주할 계획을 세웠다.

백두대간에 대한 영문 정보자료를 구하기 위해 힘쓰고 있지만 아직 조금밖에 구하지 못했고 특히 영문으로 된 가이드북이나 지도는 전혀 구할 수 없었다. 이런 자료의 부족이 모험심이 강한 외국인 산행자들에게는 사실 큰 장애요인이 되는 것은 아니다. 왜냐하면 한국과 같은 지나치게 험한 산들이 없는 나라에서는 백두대간이라고 해서 큰 위험이나 장애물은 없다고 할 수 있다.

지리적으로 좁은 한반도에는 인구가 많지만 그것은 또한 산행자들에게 문화시설과 주민들의 협력이 필요할 때 접근이 아주 용이하다는 뜻도 된다.

한국어를 조금밖에 모르는 외국인 방문객으로서 언어소통의 어려움이 때로는 계획을 성공적으로 이끌어낼 수도 있는 것이다. Andrew와 나는 백두대간에 관한 유용하고 보다 중요하고 믿을 만한 정보를 가지고 목적을 달성할 것이며 이 모든 난관을 우리의 정보를 읽어줄 독자들을 위해 극복해 내고자 한다.

Andrew는 지난 7년간 한국에서 직장생활을 하며 한국의 구석구석을 여행했으며 백두대간 산행경험도 있기 때문에 완벽한 이해와 감성을 가지고 안내를 해 줄 것이다. 나는 나와 같은, 전혀 도움이 되지 않는 외국인의 시각과 관찰력으로 산행에 임할 것이다.

그러나 염려할 필요는 없다. 나는 아프리카 국립공원에서 근무한 경력이 있으며 그것과 관련된 제로상태에서 얻은 수년간의 외국체험은 나의 관찰력과 훌륭하게 밸런스를 이루어 나갈 것으로 믿는다.

우리들은 이번 산행을 즐길 뿐만 아니라 한국을 찾는 모든 외국인들이 손쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 도움을 주려고 한다. 또 적은 돈으로 이 산행을 시도해 보려고 하는 사람들에게 실질적인 정보를 제공할 것이며, 더 나아가 이미 알려진 산길에서 벗어나 듣고 보았던 사실조차도 빠짐없이 제공해 전혀 알려지지 않은 어떤 곳(오지)을 찾아가 보려는 사람들에게도 도움을 주려고 한다.

또한 우리는 국립공원 지역 내에서 그들이 필요로 하는 모든 것에 대하여 특별한 관심을 가지는 여행객들에게 보다 풍부한 정보를 제공하기 위하여 노력할 것이다. 우리들은 다행히 뉴질랜드 주재 한국대사관의 영사담당 직원과 가깝게 일을 한 적이 있다. 그분이 산림청, 국립공원관리공단, 문화관광부의 담당 공무원들과 필요한 교섭이 가능하도록 우리들을 도와주었고 또 그 담당자들도 우리들의 산행을 적극 장려하고 지원해 주었다.

또한 산행에 대하여 우리가 필요로 하는 또 다른 관점이 있다. 그것은 산행을 하는 사람들이 갖추어야 할 매우 중요한 사항으로, 산행을 할 지역의 역사와 문화에 대해 깊이 있는 접근을 할 수 있는 능력이다.

우리들은 이 분야에 전문가이신 경희대학교의 David Mason 교수가 동참하게 된 것을 대단한 행운으로 생각한다. 그는 23년간 한국에서 살고 있는, 한국생활에 아주 익숙한 분이며 특히 한국의 산신(山神)에 대한 연구는 누구나 인정하는 학자이다. 우리들은 Mason 교수가 가이드에 관해 교육적으로 접근한다는 사실에 대해 크게 기대하고 있다. 게다가 우리들이 산행한 지역을 독특한 문체로 묘사해 읽는 사람들을 흥미진진하게 해 줄 것으로 믿고 있다.

산행 코스와 가까이 있고 그가 이미 알고 있는 절들도 빠짐없이 방문하고 답사하려고 한다. 흥미진진한 사진들이 없는 가이드북은 완전한 것이라 할 수 없으므로 Andrew와 나는 산행 중에 많은 아름다운 경치들을 서로서로 도와가며 열심히 찍어 보여줄 것이다.

산행은 70일 정도 걸릴 것이다. 우리들은 이 산행을 경주하듯이 급히 서두르지 않고 ‘과거로부터 미래를 향해’ 천천히 걸어갈 것이다

조급하게 서둘다가 관찰의 질이 떨어지지 않도록 하고 정보를 엄밀하게 수집하고 정리하기 위해서 필요한 만큼 산행의 속도를 조절할 것이다.

우리들은 지리산 국립공원에서 출발해서 많은 산행객들이 향하고 있는 방향으로 해를 등지고 북으로 무리지어 가게 될 것이다.

경험적으로 말하자면, 출발을 어떻게 하느냐는 것은 그들이 기대하는 것이 무엇이며 얼마나 만족시켜 줄 것인가를 실질적으로 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 우리들은 해발 600m 이상 되는 곳에서 출발해서 험한 바위산을 5,4km 이상 걸어서 1,300m 더 높이 올라가면 천왕봉 정상에 이르게 된다. 여기는 사방이 무한대로 트인 지리산 최고봉! 700km 산행의 출발지점이 이곳이라니 정말 멋지지 아니한가?

물론 아직은 더운 9월 초순이지만 우리들이 북쪽으로 걸어 올라감에 따라 계절도 따라 변하고 경치도 북쪽을 향해 세로로 펼쳐진 산을 따라 푸른색이 울긋불긋하게 변하면서 숲은 본래의 그 모습을 잃고 한층 아름다운 그림으로 변해가는 것을 보게 될 것이다.

우리가 거대한 태백산맥을 따라 한반도의 등줄기를 타고 북으로 계속 전진해서 산행의 마지막쯤에 이르렀을 때는 시베리아를 횡단해서 처음으로 불어오는 매섭고 차가운 북풍이 산정과 계곡을 향해 사납게 몰아칠 것이다.

산행에 관한 일반적인 사항은 우리가 운영하고 있는 블로그 사이트를 통해 설명하는 것이 최선의 방법이라고 생각한다. 다만, 우편매체 기사들은 길이를 맞추기 위해 가이드북 페이지에 두서없이 넣을 수도 있을 것이다.

David Mason교수로부터 지원받은 교육적으로 연구된 자료와 Andrew와 내가 제공하려고 하는 정보를 활용한다면 어디서 잘까, 어디서 먹을까, 어디서 한잔 할까, 어떻게 해야만 길을 잃어버리지 않을까 또 무엇을 예상하고 기대할 수 있을까 하는 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있을 것이다. 이 정보(가이드북)는 내년 중반쯤에 여러분이 입수할 수 있을 것이다.

The Baekdu Daegan (White head – Great ridge) is an unbroken ridgeline that stretches over the entire length of the Korean peninsula. In South Korea it starts at Jiri-san (exquisite-wisdom mountain), and is intersected some 650 walking km later north at the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) seperating North and South Korea. The ridge continues through North Korea to its end at Baekdu-san (White Head mountain), on the North Korean/Chinese border. The trail holds remarkable splendor in its beauty, cultural and historical significance. Its physical and spiritual presence is conceptualized by religious and sacred followers. It self-commands nationalistic reverence by all inhabitants of the Korean peninsula and is the provider of essential life-energy and source of all waterways on the peninsula, testament to that is that the trail never crosses a waterway. The Baekdu-daegan has potential in being recognized as one of the great international hiking trails as acknowledged by the South Korean government with recent discussion angled towards the preservation and promotion of the trail as a national or world heritage site. Join us on this walk back through the past and into the future as we rediscover the immense culture and history of this grand land through the path of the Baekdu – daegan.

남한의 지리산에서부터 산행길로 650km쯤 북으로 가면 남북한을 갈라놓은 DMZ와 교차하게 된다.
산맥은 북한을 관통하며 계속 북으로 뻗어 북한과 중국의 국경지대인 백두산에서 끝이 난다.
산행길은 아름다움 속에 웅장한 경관들이 있고, 문화와 역사적인 중요성도 함께 안고 있다.

최근에는 정부에서 국가 또는 세계유산으로서 산행길을 보호,장려하는 방향으로 적극 검토하고 있다.
과거에서 미래로 나아가는 우리들의 이번 백두대간 산행에 동참하여 위대한 이 땅의 소중한 문화와 역사를 되새겨 보지 않으시겠습니까?

Geumgang-san rises sharply near the east coast just north of the DMZ on the Baekdu-daegan ridge. It's peaks are steep and rugged and it's valleys famed for their spectacular beauty. The beauty of Geumgang-san is a common theme in Korean poems and paintings, and it is home to many famous Buddhist carvings and relics.
Unfortunately our walk will end short of this spectacular mountain which according to the Buddhist Avatamska Sutra has 12000 rugged pinnacles; each creating a miracle.
Tourism was opened to Geumgang-san mountain in 1998 when the Hyundai-Asan group opened a resort for both South Korean and international tourists. The guided tour to Geumgang-san is the only opportunity South Koreans have to visit the north, and interact with their northern neighbours.
I had the opportunity to visit Geumgang-san in February of this year, and although it snowed the whole time and I lost my wallet, had a fantastic time!
The mountain is truly spectacular and the trails challenging. The resort has a hotspring unequaled (in my experience) in all of Korea, and a troupe of North Korean trapeze artists perform a mind-blowing evening show; but the most memorable experience is simply driving through the country side of North Korea on route to the resort and seeing the stark difference between the lives of people living 20 minutes drive from each other, on two sides of a fence.
Tours to Geumgang-san cross the DMZ on Korean national highway no:7 on the east coast. Packages are offered for 1-3 day trips and can be booked through most Korean travel agents, special tours for foreigners are scheduled by Hyundai Asan and can be booked online at their site.

금강산

"고려의 금강산을 구경하고 난 다음날 나는 죽어도 여한이 없을 것이다 " 소동파(중국.960-1277)

금강산은 백두대간의 동해안 근처 DMZ 바로 북쪽에 날카롭게 솟아있는 산이다. 봉우리들은 가파르고 험준한 거친 바위이고 계곡들은 화려하고 아름답기로 유명하다.

금강산의 아름다움은 한국의 시와 동양화의 공통된 테마이다. 그리고 금강산은 많은 유명한 불교조각과 유적의 본고장이다.

불운하게도 우리들은 이 천하절경의 산을 아주 짧은 관광코스로 끝내야만 한다니 참으로 안타까운 일이다. 옛날부터 한국에서는 그 기기묘묘한 봉우리가 ‘일만이천봉’이라고 전해 내려오고 있다.

1,998년 현대아산그룹에서 한국인과 국제관광객을 위해 금강산 리조트를 개장하고 금강산 관광을 시작했다. 오직 북한 안내원의 안내에 의해서만 관광을 할 수 있으므로 아주 제한적이고 어려운 여행길이다. 또한 이곳을 통해서만 남한사람들이 북한에 있는 가족과 친척들을 만날 수 있는 유일한 곳이기도 하다.

금년 2월에 나는 금강산에 갈 수 있는 기회가 있었다. 일정 내내 눈이 왔고, 또 지갑도 잃어버렸지만 그것을 보충하고도 남는 멋진 여행이었다.

산은 참으로 화려하고 길은 험했다. 리조트에는 온천이 있는데 내가 아는 한 한국의 다른 온천과 비교할 수 없을 정도로 좋은 온천이었다. 그리고 이브닝 쇼에서 북한 곡예단의 공중그네타기의 절묘한 연기는 스릴 넘치고 감동적이었다.

무엇보다도 인상 깊었던 것은 남북한 양쪽 철책선 사이를 자동차로 달려 20분간 걸리는 DMZ를 사이에 두고 남북한의 생활상이 현격하게 차이가 나는 것이었으며 우리가 타고 있는 자동차가 리조트로 향하는 북한의 시골길을 조용히 달릴 때의 형언할 수 없는 느낌이었다.

금강산 관광은 동해안을 따라가는 7번 고속도로를 이용해서 DMZ를 통과해서 할 수 있으며 패키지관광은 1-3일 걸리는 상품이 있다. 대부분의 한국 여행사를 통해서 예약할 수 있다. 현대아산에서는 외국인을 위한 특별 관광 상품도 마련해 두고 있으며 그들의 사이트에 들어가 온라인으로 예약할 수도 있다.

Seorak-san is 2-3 days walk from Jinbu-Ryeong pass.

Jinbu-ryeong is the end of the line for Baekdu-daegan walkers in South Korea, though less than half way from Jiri-san to Baekdu-san, the end of the ridge itself on the border of North Korea and China.

This section sees the Baekdu-daegan cross from Gyeongsangbuk-do into Gangwon-do.
Along 23.7km the trail passes over 5 peaks; Guryeong-san, Shinseon-bong, Gitdaebaegi-bong, Buso-bong and most notably the great Taebaek-san. It also passes Yooil-sa on the north east slope of Taebaek-san, which to my knowledge is the only case in which the track passes directly past a temple.

Doraegi-jae pass is crossed by highway 88 between the small town of Seobyeok to the SE and Yeongweol NW, Seobyeok is about 5km downhill and after the long lonely walk to the pass could be a good option for warm food and cold beer. There appears to be camping and water 5ometres or so north up the road on the left. There is also a pagoda for shelter.

The track leaves Doraegi-jae and runs east up a steep slope fo 15mins or so before reaching the ridge, five minutes or so along the ridge is an iron tower (purpose unknown) and roughly 15min later is crossed by a small mountain road (임도??) according to my map it only runs a few hundred metres in each direction. From here the trail turns to a NW direction toward an unamed peak of 920m continuing to a second peak of 985m. Between the two peaks are quite a number of Azalea trees which I imagine look fantastic in the early summer.
A short distance from the second unamed peak are two helipads, from here the track goes slowly downhill and after 2ominutes reaches another helipad and deadend mountain road crossing the ridge. It is clear that the left hand side of the ridge in particular is a military area.
From this second Imdo the track continues very steeply NE turning direct North to a 1256m peak (about 30min) and then turns east toward Guryeong-san (1345.7m). Between the two peaks are a number of large rocks to the right of the track.
Guryeong-san accomodates another helipad and thus has a bald peak which offers good views of surrounding peaks. To the east is Shinsan-bong, northeast you can see Gitdaebaegi-bong, Taebaek-san and Hambaek-san in good weather, the next four peaks on the trail.
From Guryeong-san the track widens to a fire-break line running steeply SE to Gojik-ryeong pass, a secondary trail from Seobyeok village meets the ridge here, 100 metres down this path is an altar where travelling peddlers would stop to pray for an incident free journey when delivering their goods. According to my translator/researcher worship is still held at this altar Apr14th of the lunar calendar every year.
The Baekdudaegan trail continues from this intersection along the fire break to a peak of 1231m and down to Gomneomi-jae, from this pass there is a track to the right running down to Shildu dong and Jinjo dong of Aedang-ri. At Gomneomi-jae is a small bungalow, im not sure if staying there is possible though.
From the pass the track shifts from SE to head north, there is another helipad and the firebreak ends, at the end of the firebreak is a good spot for camping. From here to Shinseon-bong peak is 20 minutes of steep slog to yet another helipad, the track turns to head SE again descending from from Sinseon-bong along the ridge. After 30-40 minutes of easy ridge walking is a three way intersection (삼가리), where the ridge breaks into northern and southern arms, to the right a secondary trail runs along the southern arm to Gakhwa-san (1176m), while the Baekdu-daegan trail follows the left ridge, turning north into Taebaek-si (city). At this junction water can be found off the left of the track, from a spring feeding the Chunshiri-gol stream.
Half an hour north of the intersection is a 1174m peak, from here you can see Shinseol-bong to the west and the next peak Gitdaebaegi-bong, an hour north east. After descending the ridge from the peak for 10minutes there is a large pine tree where it appears people have rested or possibly camped, water is available on the left of the track from another spring feeding the Chunshiri-gol and probably to the right as well from the Jangbawi-gol.
From this spot there are two tracks, one which continues along the main ridge line toward Gitdaebaegi-bong and another which heads in the same direction left of the main ridge line, they both meet up near Gitdaebaegi-bong. I took the main ridge track and was glad I did as there are a lot of Royal Azalea trees (철쭉) along the ridge. Gitdaebaegi-bong (1370m) is reached after about 45 minutes, from the peak a trail goes right, south east to Duri-bong and down to Hyeon-dong, while the Baekdu-daegan trail continues north toward Buso-bong in Taebaek-san provincial park.
Gitdaebaegi-bong to Buso-bong is a good 2 hour hike along the ridge line. About half an hour into the walk you see the first Jumok-namu, a woody alpine tree of the Yew family. These trees are only found on the higher slopes of korean mountains, most famously on Taebaek-san where they are found in the greatest numbers.

To Buso-bong peak are two trails, one following the ridge line and another on the western side of the ridge.
Buso-bong (1546.5m) is named Muswi-bong on most maps.
I've used Buso-bong here as that's how its named in the map I was following.
A friend told me Buso-bong is named after Buso wang, son of Dangun the mythical first king of Korea.

After descending from Buso-bong the Baekdu-daegan joins the main ridge of Taebaksan Provincial park between Cheonje-dan (north-west), and Munsu-bong (north-east). The trail becomes wider as it enters this popular hiking area and heads north-east through highland forest dominated by azalea trees, to Cheonje-dan, 30 minutes away.

Reaching Cheonje-dan (Altar for offering to heaven) evokes a feeling of arriving somewhere special.

The views from Cheonje-dan are 360 degress and on a clear day, spectacular.

Looking south, south-west you can see a great stretch of the Baekdu-daegan, including all of the peaks I walked in this section, and follow the subsidary ridge lines breaking off the Baekdu-daegan like willow roots (see top photo), if lucky you may also catch a glimpse of Cheongryang-san almost due south. To the east is rocky Munsu-bong and north Hambaek-san.

A track runs east off the ridge down to Manggyeong-sa temple. A spring flows at the temple all year round with a sign proudly claiming it as the finest water in all Korea. There is also a small store at the temple serving ramyeon and hot coffee; definitely worth the 5minute detour for any through walker.

From Janggun-bong its all downhill to Youil-sa.

After half an hour or so the trail reaches an intersection, to the left is a small cable car which takes supplies down the ridge to some kind of building(?), to the right is a 4WD track from which those supplies are driven from Highway 31, and straight ahead, just around the corner is Youil-sa temple.

Water is available at Youil-sa from a spring in the garden.

The trail continues along the ridge past Youil-sa, and narrows as you leave the popular Taebak-san tracks.

30-40 minutes after leaving Youil-sa the trail steepens toward an 1174 metre rocky peak, from here it curves north and descends to Sanryeong-gak, a small pagoda built by peddlers crossing the pass in times gone. Worship is still held here on April 15th of the Lunar calendar, interestingly the day after it is held at Gojik-ryeong, near where I started walking.

Of course nowadays any traffic crossing Hwabang-jae pass uses Korean state highway 31, a further 10 minutes down the trail, which is where my walk ends.

The pass is an obvious point for a rest, I couldnt see any natural source of water but refreshments of all kinds can be bought at the Apyeong service centre.
